The resume objective has become a thing of the past - don't let your job search get left behind, too!

A resume objective is an important part of a traditional resume one might use in their job search. But in today's fast-paced job market, more and more employment seekers are using a qualifications summary to lead off their resume or curriculum vitae. This means that using a resume objective is fast becoming outdated - don't let your job search get left behind with it!

Traditionally, a resume objective is used to indicate a career goal (such as the type of position, experience, or skills) that a candidate wants from their new job. Normally, this would be the first section an employer would see on the resume. It is used to indicate that the candidate has a goal in mind and that they have the initiative to share that goal during their job seach.

The resume objective is becoming outdated in the job search arena, however. Many hiring mangers see them as too self-serving; they are too focused on what the job seeker wants, instead of what they have to offer the company. Because of this, many employers, headhunters, and employment agencies are counseling more and more candidates to include a qualifications summary instead of an objective.

As the resume objective is left behind, qualifications summaries are becoming the job search norm. A qualifications summary consists of several concise statements that focus on the most important career information, abilities, accomplishments, and qualities the candidate has to offer. This short paragraph (leaving out all personal pronouns like I, me, you, etc, and other non-essential words) would appear as a the first section on the resume. This may be the only section actually read by the prospective employer, so it should be very strong and convincing. It should focus on specific examples of what the candidate can do for the employer, as well as indicate past performance with specific accomplishments.

Although the resume objective is not being used in most modern resumes, it can still be a good choice for people changing careers, students just starting out, or for resumes and curriculum vitae aimed at very traditional fields. If you are unsure of which to use, you could write a qualifications summary and include your career objective as a compromise. Just make sure that whatever you write will grab your target's attention and you can't go wrong!
