What recruiters and headhunters fear most - and how it can affect your employment search!

When you search for recruiters or headhunters that might be able to help you find new employment, it is important that you find someone who you can trust. But trust is a two-way street. Don’t be surprised if the recruiters and headhunters you talk to are not willing to reveal their employment leads or company contacts right away.

Don’t be offended if recruiters and headhunters won’t divulge their employment contacts right away, they are just protecting themselves.

This is because a recruiters biggest fear is that you will go around them once they divulge information about the companies that hired them. Headhunters work based on commission not salary. If they give employment advice to a job seeker who then goes around them and contacts an employer directly about a job, the recruiter will not get paid like they should. This is why they may initially take a candidate’s resume without telling them exactly whom it is they represent.

As low as it might seem to most job search candidates, recruiters and headhunters are taken advantage of in this way once in a while. This makes them just a little suspicious of all employment candidates, at least initially – it’s a case of “one bad seed” ruining it for everyone. But don’t despair; over time your recruiter will reveal more details to you as you build up trust with each other. So next time you submit your resume to a headhunter, don’t be offended if they don’t offer up all their contacts right away – just try to understand their situation and know that they will still be able to help you in your job search.
