Networking tips for employment seekers that will help them find a job!

Networking is one of the most powerful tools an employment seeker can use to find a job. Unfortunately, many career hunters don’t know how to put this tool to use! So if the thought of networking turns you off, follow these simple steps. This will make it a little easier to start talking to people about your employment situation and to eventually help you find a job.

Step One: List all your potential networking contacts. You can build an employment network with anyone, so the first step is to list as many people as you can think of. You can include family, friends, co-workers, former employers, recruiters, career counselors, former classmates, people from your church, neighbors, your dentist – the list goes on. Don’t worry about whether you think they can help you find a job at this point, just write down everyone you can think of.

Step Two: Talk to the most promising networking contacts first. Start by telling them about your current employment situation and that you would like to make a change. Explain what you would like to do and then ask them if they have any career advice or ideas of people you might be able to talk to for help. Don’t start by asking them to help you find a job or if they know of any openings; at this point all you want is information. If they do know of something they will most likely offer it up anyway. After talking to them, be sure to leave them with a copy of your current resume and thank them for their time.

When networking, start by asking your contacts for employment advice - not if they can find you a  job!

Step Three: Follow-up on all your networking efforts. Keep track of the people you talk to about your employment search. Remember to send them a thank you if they provided any useful information or new contacts; you want to make sure they feel good about talking to you so they will be more prone to helping you again in the future. Keep in contact with them over time, emailing or calling about once a month. When you do find a job, make sure to update everyone in your network with your new situation and updated resume.

Step Four: Always work to increase your networking group. Keep adding contacts to your network by following up on any new leads you get from your current network. Attend career fairs, conferences, and social occasions with the goal of increasing your network. Serve your current network and inspire goodwill by sharing your experience, information, and helpful contacts; networking is a two-way street so always be ready to help others achieve their goals.

By following these easy networking steps, you will have a plan to put this powerful employment tool to work for you. Most people find a job through one of their career search networks, so shouldn’t you be using yours to help you market your resume and locate potential leads?
