Do you need to pay job recruiters and headhunters to help you find a new career?

Job recruiters and headhunters are usually paid in one of two ways – neither of which includes being paid by the career search candidates themselves. One method is “contingency pay.” Here job recruiters or headhunters are paid a commission by the client company when they fill a position or career opening; the pay is based on the hired candidates starting salary.

The other method is when job recruiters or headhunters are paid a “retainer” to find quality career candidates for a position. This is when the recruiters are paid up-front to find a suitable candidate for an employment opening. This pay may or may not be based on the candidate’s salary.

Job recruiters and headhunters are usually paid in one of two ways to fill a career opening.

In general, retained job recruiters or headhunters work with career candidates in the over $200,000 range, while contingency recruiters help people in the $25,000 to $75,000 salary range; people looking for employment in the $75,000 to $200,000 will usually end up working with a mixture of the two.

One difference between these two types of job recruiters and headhunters is that retained recruiters usually contact candidates they are interested in, instead of the candidates contacting them regarding their career. They tend to work with a very short list and will not return solicitations from people who just send in their resume.

Contingency job recruiters or headhunters on the other hand deal with solicitations daily from eager career searchers. They maintain resume databases that they search every time they receive an employment opportunity to fill. Therefore, if you are interested in working with a job recruiter, it would pay to submit your resume to a few reputable contingency headhunters in your field.
