Trying to find a job with a recruiter or headhunter may be a battle against the odds.

A lot of job seekers think that they will find a job instantly just by using a recruiter or headhunter. They send their resume in after seeing an employment opportunity online, or they are a little more assertive and try to find a job by contacting a recruiter or headhunter, but then never hear back.

This can lead to frustration, but it is an all too common story. The odds that someone will actually find a job through their recruiter or headhunter is very small when using online firms. Online recruiters get hundreds of resumes per day which are added to the tens of thousands in their database. Meanwhile, they may only be filling a few hundred of employment openings each year – not all of which are filled by candidates from their database!

Even though the odds to find a job with an online recruiter or headhunter are small, they are still a free service.

Even though the odds to find a job through an online recruiter or headhunter are small, there is an upside: their services are free. It doesn’t cost you anything to submit your resume to a recruiting firm online, and if you strategically stuff it with employment keywords you can increase your chances of coming up as a match for a position. Just don’t base your entire career search on online recruiting firms; they should only be part of your job search, used as an auxiliary to more active methods like networking.
